Fall 2019 Lighting Studio 1: Light, Vision, & Representation, Human Scale Light Installation
Instructors: Francesca Bastianini, Maria Dautant, Alex Pappas-Kalber
Team: Claire Song, Robyn Bohn
As a team, we built this lighting installation to be a calming respite in our school library. The delicate wood frame quietly hovers over the counter and seems to disappear when the light source is turned off. The soft-colored light is created by using narrow strips of dichroic film over a series of led strip lights. The mesmerizing material is made of laminated layers of resin with different levels of refractivity. Dichroic film reinforces certain wavelengths of light while re-routing others, creating various hues depending on the angle of light. Working in a 1:1 scale allowed us to experience how science and sensorial aspects of design can unite.
