Situated on the top of a man-made mountain overlooking Berlin, Teufelsberg is a former NSA spy center where the installation Shadow Unit was created over a three-week period. In the final installation, viewers entered an abandoned mens bathroom guided only by three small holes of natural light. After a quiet introduction, a collection of video recordings from Teufelsberg filled the room with gentle rain, demolishing flames, epic sunsets, and even the skylight view from the solar composting toilet seat. I created this immersive installation to scratch at the surface of the questions:
What new opportunities and challenges arise when we live off the grid?
How do we disrupt prescribed gender roles in the built environment?
How do natural light and the daily shifts in atmosphere transform our perception of space and place?
What new discoveries can be made working in an transdisciplinary fashion?
Shadow Unit was created during the 2016 Sense Adapt Create, Field Station Seminar.
