Working closely with the choreographer and lighting designer, Caitlin Dippo and I created site-specific interventions to compliment the movement in the dance piece, Period. As a nod to the trio dancing, we built two replicas of an existing red pipe that reached from floor to ceiling. The only colors in the performance were the three dancers in pink moving between the three red pipes, one original pipe and two faux. By using a series of connected shades we created a clean and textured backdrop concealing windows, pipes and an air conditioner. The backdrop screen allowed for the audiences’ attention to be more focused on the dancers' movements. The quality of the space became dynamic with the use of light. As a period to Period, the last movements were made with all of the lights fully turned up giving the room a heavenly intensity. Then with an abrupt shift, the room became black besides two illuminated rectangles behind the screened backdrop.
